Volkswagen Could Give Future EVs More Traditional Names

Volkswagen long stuck with “real” model names instead of alphanumeric titles for most of its vehicles, but that changed with the ID line of electric vehicles. Now, just a few years later, the automaker is reportedly considering abandoning the ID naming convention for some future EVs.

A VW board member recently told reporters that some of the automaker’s planned ID models would return to “proper names again.” While those two EVs, the ID.Every1 and ID.2all are likely not coming to the U.S., the move could bode well for American buyers in the future.

Beyond vehicle titles, Volkswagen has leaned into the ID name for its safety equipment, calling it ID Drive. But, while the names look cool on paper and marketing materials, they can be confusing for buyers, though the numbering system does make it easier to figure out where the vehicles fit into the VW lineup.

Volkswagen currently sells the ID.4 and ID. Buzz in the United States, and it’s unlikely those model names will change. That said, upcoming electrified versions of the Golf could sport a more traditional badge. Having real names will make understanding VW’s lineup much easier, but the change could lead to short-term confusion as older ID-branded EVs sell alongside newer models with a different naming convention.
